From Work placement to job: juggling work and training

Posted on: 23/09/10

“I was on New Deal with the Jobcentre and they got me a work placement.”

“When I finished my work placement they offered me a part time position as an administrator for a voluntary and community sector organisation. I have been there for just over a year now.”

“I suppose a good day is when loads of people don’t come and unload their work onto you, and you’re not too stressed, no problems have arisen. A bad day is probably the complete opposite, when things do go wrong and people do come and give you their work.”

“My contract comes up for renewal at the end of December and, as far as I’m aware, there is going to be a three month gap to find out if they get their funding or not.”

“I would hope that I could get another part time admin job and go back to college and study. That’s what my plans are.”

“I have been looking for part time admin jobs that are quite flexible with the hours, to fit around college.

“I suppose I’ve encountered quite a lot of problems looking for another job. My two main ones that come to mind is finding a part time job that’s local because the time it takes to travel as well as fitting in with college. It might not be viable on the days I do have to be in college if I get on a course. Another problem is that quite a lot of jobs ask for an NVQ2 Business Admin and I suppose it’s one thing to be studying towards it and another thing to actually have it.”

“I am currently undertaking an NVQ2 Business Admin and I went to a lot of in house training as well. I’ve done Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, Information, Advice and Guidance. There might be more but I can’t think of them.”

“I would like to do an Access course in the hope that I can get onto the community studies course next year. I also wouldn’t mind doing an NVQ2 Information, Advice and Guidance and I’ve often thought about doing a TEFL  - Teaching English as a Foreign Language - course as well.”
